The short answer is yes. JavaScript is a very popular client side coding language which is used on nearly every single website online. But it has evolved to also become a server side coding language with Node.js which puts it in direct competition with PHP.
Back in 2015, Matt Mullenweg sent a message to developers “Learn JavaScript Deeply”.Since Matt is the founder of WordPress, head of Automattic and helps to guide WordPress into the future, it’s important that as web developers, we learn JavaScript.
Over at WordPress.com, they’re using a new codebase codenamed Calypso which is built with Node.js, ReactJS and is a SPA aka Single Page Application.
This is an obvious sign that JavaScript is vital to WordPress Development and also playing a more significant role in how WordPress functions.
Gutenberg, which will be available in WordPress 5.0, is driven by React JS which is another signal that JavaScript is a must.
As a Full Stack Web Developer who focuses on WordPress, I use JavaScript when developing Themes and Plugins, but also, I use JavaScript to help automate my workflow by using Gulp JS which is a task runner.
So it’s clear that JavaScript has evolved significantly over the years from a client side coding language to a full featured coding language that can be used on the server side as well.
